Games To Play Inside With Your Pup

November 15th, 2021 by

As the weather keeps cooling down and you and your pet spend more time indoors, you might need some new ways to keep that pup entertained. Try these fun indoor games with your dog.

Hide and Seek

This game of hide and seek can test your dog’s searching abilities. First, show them the item that they’ll be searching for, like a favorite toy of theirs. Then, tell them to “stay” while you go hide it. Send them off to find it, and remember to speak encouragingly as they get closer to it. When they find the toy, celebrate it so they get excited about finding it.

Sniffing for Treats

This take on the typical shell game will put your pup’s keen sense of smell to the test. Dogs rely heavily on their olfactory sense, and a dog can actually improve its ability to sniff things out with practice. Gather several small containers, turn them upside down, then hide a treat under one of them (but don’t let the dog see). Let them sniff around until they find it, and give them plenty of praise and pets when they make the right choice. For a hands-off version of this activity, consider getting your dog a food dispenser toy that requires some tumbling or puzzle solving before it expels any morsels.

Back and Forth Tag

You’ll need a couple of people for this game, as the dog will be running between the two over increasingly longer distances. To start, stand a short distance from the other person, then call the dog over. Reward them once they reach you, then let the other person call the dog. When the dog reaches them, move farther away and call your pet again. Keep moving farther with each to give the dog more room to run and seek you out.
