Have Fun With Fido This Winter

We tend to spend much more time at home during the winter months, and dogs can get bored just like people. You can help your furry friend stay active all winter long with these fun ideas.

Go Outside

Whenever the weather allows, head outdoors for some fun in the open air. A refreshing walk would be good for everyone, even on snow days, and many dogs love to play in the snow. They might dig, bound, or even roll around, and you might even be tempted to join them for some snow angels. This should help even the more energetic breeds use up some of that energy for a good night’s sleep. Be prepared for a big, wet shake once their done, though. If you don’t want to risk losing their favorite ball or toy in the snow, you can improvise and play fetch with some snow balls. Just don’t keep your pet out there too long, as even a thick fur coat has its chill-resisting limits. When you go out with your pet, remember to keep them safe. You can protect the pads of their feet from cold snow by rubbing petroleum jelly on them. Just make sure to remove the jelly when you get back home, as it’s very slick.

Indoor Fun

When it’s better to stay in, there’s still plenty you and your pet can do at home. Staying active and playing games is good for a dog’s mind, and you can engage them in some indoor activates that make the most of the space you have to work with. Hide and seek can put their excellent sense of smell to work, and while indoor fetch can be tricky with bigger dogs, you can clear some space for a short-distance game. If you want to keep them occupied for a little while, you can also give them a toy with a treat inside, like Starmarks or Kongs. This will put their minds to work until they can retrieve that tasty little reward.
