Dogs can get bored just like people, and pups of all ages and sizes appreciate fun and games. Plan some activity time with your dog and try these pet games.

Guessing Games and Puzzles

Some dogs are surprisingly good at puzzle solving, and a little brain-teasing goes along perfectly with other games that involve physical play. When you want to give your pet a treat, show it to them, then bring both hands behind your back and hide it in one of them. Then, show them both closed fists to let them guess which one has the hidden treat. Dogs with a particularly strong sense of smell will have an advantage here, but the more you play, the more the treat scent will linger in both hands, making it more challenging. Treat dispensers offer a hands-free alternative to this game, as these toys hide a treat inside, prompting your dog to tumble it around until they can coax out the prize.

Exploring

It’s always nice to get out for a walk, so grab a leash and bring your pet with you for some fresh air. Whether you have a favorite walking trail or just some sidewalks around your neighborhood, the change of scenery and accompanying scents and sounds can be exciting and engaging for your dog. If there’s a park along your route, pack a frisbee or other toys for some playtime.

Some of the most fun pet games are also the most well-known. Dogs love to chase things, so blowing bubbles or shining a laser pointer on the ground will get their attention as well. Fetch is always a good go-to game whenever you need to help your pet burn some energy. You’re most likely to get their attention with a toy they really love, but if you’re outside, you can always improvise with any old stick you find lying around. You can also bring a frisbee out to really let them cover some ground, and they might even leap to try to catch it mid-air. If you’re staying inside, you might be able to clear out a little space for quick runs, too.
