When spring is in the air, so is pollen. While these beautiful days are a welcome relief, it doesn’t take long for your car to accumulate a bright yellow coat, so consider these tips for keeping it clean.

The Problem with Pollen

Pollen isn’t just an annoying allergen or eyesore on the exterior of your car. It can actually damage the paint if it remains on the car for too long. Those particles are particularly acidic, and they can lead to rust and wear. While it might seem like rinsing off the pollen with a hose should be enough, the water only accelerates the oxidation process, so there’s more work to do if you want to protect your paintjob.

Wax Away

Waxing your car can guard it with a protective layer against dirt and pollen.  A good wax or synthetic sealant should be easy to find, and you can apply it after your next wash. Move your vehicle into a shady spot so that the sun doesn’t dry your car washing soap and leave streaks, then give your car a good cleaning. Once its dirt-free and dry, you’ll need to follow the specific instructions for the wax you found, but you can generally apply it with a wax pad in circular motions, then remove the excess with a soft cloth.

Keep it Covered

As long as your car is in motion, it’s bound to pick up some pollen, but you can avoid a steady accumulation when parked by keeping your car covered. If you own a garage, the answer is obvious, but you can shelter your against the airborne allergens even if you don’t have a covered space to park it. Consider carefully draping a car cover over your vehicle, and keep in mind that many manufacturers have covers specifically designed for their models.
