Step Back In Time At The James Monroe Museum

If you live in the Fredericksburg area, you might or might not already know about the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library. If this is the first you’re hearing of it, then it’s a sign that you need to visit! Give yourself the gift of knowledge this holiday season when you stop by and learn all about James and Elizabeth Monroe.

The Monroes

James Monroe was born in Monroe Hall, VA, in 1758, and lived his life as a statesman, lawyer, diplomat, and founding father. He was also the fifth president of the United States beginning in 1817. His wife, Elizabeth Jane, served as the first lady, even though she could not fulfill all of her duties because of an illness.

The House

The museum is housed in the building that James’ descendants believe (in 1927) his old law office was in. It has since been confirmed that the office was located on that plot of land, even though the building is not quite old enough to have been the original one. The site is still special, though, because the official office once stood where it is.

The museum opened in 1927, and before it was the museum it is today, it was a plethora of fascinating things: a warehouse, restaurant, schoolhouse, and a house for freed slaves following the civil war. So as you can imagine, the history of these walls runs very deep.

The hours are 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. every day except for Sunday when they’re only open from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. A trip with the family or friends would be a wonderful present this time of year, and we all know experiences make the best gifts!
