Is it Time to Change Your Key Fob Batteries?

How long do Mazda key fob batteries last? When is it time to replace the batteries in your Mazda key fob?
How do you know when to change your key fob batteries? Key fobs have become a standard vehicle tool. A typical Key fob has four buttons to lock doors, unlock doors, release the trunk lock, and activate the alarm system. Your first set of key fobs should last around 3 years before needing to be replaced. More advanced key fobs are able to start the vehicle not just access the car. If you have a push-to-start vehicle that works by locating your car keys, a dead key fob may prevent you from starting your vehicle and essentially leave you stranded.
Well, there are several warning signs that your key fob battery may be low.
The first sign of a waning battery is a shortened signal range. You can expect a well-powered key fob to have a signal range of 60 feet or more. A good way to check if your signal range is decreasing is to do the parking spaces test. You should be able to lock or unlock your car from at least 8-10 parking spaces away.
Another sign to change your key fob battery is inconsistent or delayed signal reception. If you have to press the button on your key fob several times to lock or unlock the door you may need to change your key fob battery. The same is true if you only need to press the unlock button on your key fob once but then wait 1-2 seconds for the car to unlock.
Check Your Spare Key Fob
If you notice these issues your first instinct may be to switch to the spare key and key fob. However even when not in use batteries still lose energy just at a slower rate.
The best course of action is to use your spare key temporarily and drop off your primary key fob at Safford Mazda for a new battery. It is a minor service and can be done quickly. We do not recommend trying to replace the battery on your own. Key fobs are made to be tightly closed and water resistant. When forcing the shell open you may damage an internal unit or compromise the shell. It may not seem like a big deal but having a battery replaced is cheaper than buying an entirely new key fob.
